The bathroom is the most used room in the home and most times it isn’t a pretty thing. The amount of water, steam, and smells that it sees on a daily basis is enough to cause mold and mildew to grow and to keep you cleaning it every day. However, things can be made better with the right exhaust fan installed.

Exhaust fans are an appliance used to draw moisture and air from a room using a reverse fan. In order for the unit to be used properly it must be vented to the exhaust. If not then all it will do is pull in the moist air and push it into other parts of the house. With the proper ventilation system you will change its course and push it outside where it belongs.

First you need to work your way into the roof crawl space that is above the bathroom. You might also try to unscrew the exhaust from the ceiling and let it hang down by the wire connectors. Measure the circular hole size and buy an aluminum coil dryer hose and two c-clamps that are slightly bigger.

Place the c-clamp onto the hose and connect it to the exhaust hole. Make sure that you tighten the hose using a c-clamp screw. Peek inside at the hole in the ceiling and find the closest outside wall. Measure the height of the wall from the outside. Now add six inches to the measurement so that you can place 2×4’s into the rafters.

Drill a hole into the siding three inches above the mark you used for the wall height plus the six inches. Use a pencil to indicate the size of the new hose and where it should go. Now inset an electric vertical saw into the drilled hole and cut in a circle pattern.

Reach inside of the hole and take the vent hose, pulling it a few inches through. Put the c-clamp onto the hose and link it to the outdoor exhaust fan vent hole. Tighten this and then apply the exterior silicon caulk around the hold and siding on the back of the vent. Push the hose in so that it is flush with the wall.
